Financial Assistance
Relocation in Indianapolis poses two great challenges to refugee families:
Finding affordable housing
Easy access to reliable transportation
Indy’s housing market offers little in the way of “affordable” housing. 100% of refugees will start out renting an apartment or house. Market-rate rents for a 2-bedroom apartment are around $1,200/month. Most refugees will start out in jobs that pay between $12 - $15/hour. You can do the math and quickly see that someone making $15/hour will earn $2,400 in a month. Paying a market rate rent on a property like this takes half their income, an amount that is unsustainable.
Our team offers rent assistance to ensure that the family doesn’t pay more than 30% of their gross monthly income on rent. We may also offer transportation assistance money if the family lacks access to public transportation. (Often, the lowest cost housing is NOT on a bus line, making a car a critical part of self-sufficiency).
100% of the donations we receive go to the families we serve. We do not use donations to fund any of our administrative expenses (such as the hosting fees for this website).
