Education Support

Many families arrive in the United States with minimal English

Refugees all share that learning English is the key to accomplishing almost everything in their new communities. It enables them to:

  • Seek better jobs.

  • Pursue their high school diploma and/or continuing education beyond high school.

  • Communicate with their neighbors, the school system, the healthcare system, and the banking system.

  • Navigate roads, stores, websites, and community resources.

Volunteers with an ESL background are a valuable asset. In addition to providing conversation practice for families, ESL tutors can help reinforce basics: telling time, making a healthcare appointment, filling out job applications, and more. The ultimate goal is to get adult family members enrolled in formal ESL classes. The tutor is integral in making this happen - researching available options given a family’s constraints and then helping them get enrolled. The goal is to help adult family members get enrolled in local adult education programs where ESL is taught AND to identify a pathway to a HS diploma, GED, vocational certificate, or college degree.
